Phrasebook // Drawings

A phrase in contemporary dance lexicon refers to a sequence of gestures that have a beginning and an end. Phrases can be added on to, repeated or fragmented, providing movement vocabulary specific to individual dancers and/or dance makers. I think of my current drawings as phrases that trace locomotion on the page to form a personal dance notation. I use a custom-made rubber stamp of my body which I then encircle, umbilicate and connect to form sequences, as in pre-cinematic still photography. The drawings shown here are integrated into my photographs of dancers, thus adding an element of live action onto the captured and fixed image.
